JAKARTA: Five people were wounded, mostly by arrows and
machetes, during a brawl between two groups of residents from the
former red-light district, Kali Jodo, Jembatan Dua, Tambora
district, West Jakarta, early on Sunday.

Two victims, Andri Rusli, 51, and Muhajirin, 24, suffered
serious injuries. Andri was injured in the head and right ear,
while Muhajirin suffered stab wounds to the right side of his
waist, forehead and temple.

Three other victims, Sukri, 41, Yusuf, 21, and Agus Abdul
Rohman, 30, suffered minor injuries. All victims were residents
of Kali Jodo and its surroundings.

Andri, Sukri and Yusuf were taken to Sumber Waras Hospital,
West Jakarta, while Muhajirin and Agus Abdul Rohman were treated
at Atmajaya Hospital.

A nurse at Sumber Waras Hospital said Andri was still being
treated at the hospital's intensive care unit as an arrow had
penetrated his right ear. He had been taken to the hospital with
severe bleeding from the wound.

Other injury victims went home after being treated at the
hospitals.

Police allege the cause of the fight after the sahur (predawn
meal) was simply a misunderstanding between the two groups. -- JP

TNI children involved in brawls

JAKARTA: Two groups of youngsters from the Jakarta Military
Command and the Army Strategic Reserves Command housing complexes
were involved in a two-round brawl early on Sunday, on Jl. Sultan
Iskandar Muda, South Jakarta.

No fatalities were reported, while the injured suffered only
light wounds.

The brawl started at around 4 a.m. after the sahur (predawn
meal) when the youths from both groups, whose complexes were
divided only by a road, started street races.

They mocked each other, which led to a brawl and stone-
throwing incident.

Dozens of police from Kebayoran Lama police subprecinct were
deployed to separate the groups, but the brawl recurred at 7 a.m.
after the police had withdrawn.

Both groups used sharp weapons and Molotov cocktails in
attacking each other.

Kebayoran Lama chief of detectives First Insp. Bambang Purnomo
promised that such brawl would not happen again, claiming that he
had approached leading figures from both complexes to stop the
violence.

"None of those involved in the brawls have been detained," he
said. -- JP
