A large fire has engulfed a sandal factory on Jalan Melati Raya, Tanah Tinggi, Tangerang City, Banten. After five hours, the blaze is still being tackled by the fire brigade (damkar).

Head of Emergency and Logistics at the Tangerang City Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), Andia Suherlandia, said officers on the ground are facing a number of difficulties in extinguishing the fire. The firefighting operation has been underway since 10.45 pm WIB.

“When the report came in, the fire was already large and spreading,” he told reporters in the early hours of Monday (22/6/2026).

Andia explained there are several localised areas at the site making suppression difficult. These include areas containing finished sandals, solid raw materials such as rubber, and various chemical liquids.

“There are three localised areas on fire, containing finished sandal goods, solid rubber-type raw materials, and various chemical liquids supporting production. The characteristics of these materials require a longer time for the extinguishing process,” Andia said.

Currently, the Tangerang Fire Brigade is focusing on preventing the fire from spreading further and averting an explosion. Meanwhile, the impact of smoke on residents is being mitigated by volunteers at the scene.

“Our handling is focused on cutting off the spread and securing a chemical tank with a capacity of 20,000 litres and dozens of drums to prevent an explosion,” he stated.

“Mitigation of the smoke impact on residents is being carried out by fellow volunteers from Tangerang City,” he added.

The Tangerang City BPBD stated in its report that so far there have been no injuries or fatalities as a result of the incident.
