Five die in Bandung jail

BANDUNG, West Java: Five detainees at Kebonwaru Prison in Bandung have died in the last two months allegedly due to poor health services at the penitentiary, Antara reported on Thursday.

A source at state-run Hasan Sadikin General Hospital cited results of the detainees' postmortem examinations, which revealed that the five people were suffering from bronchitis and sinusitis.

The detainees were hospitalized after receiving treatment at the penitentiary's health clinic. All the patients arrived at the hospital in a critical condition, the last patient died on Wednesday.

The source also said that the bodies of the victims were covered in bruises.

The hospital frequently treats prisoners injured in penitentiary brawls, the source added.
