Five day week for schools

Five day week for schools

From Gatra

The problem of the five day week for schools is still being
discussed. In Yogyakarta, for example, a team from the Provincial
Office of the Department of Education and Culture has concluded
that the five day school week is not effective.

However, in Jakarta the Minister of Education and Culture has
given the green light to schools which have tried the new scheme
to continue with this.

On the other hand, if I'm not mistaken, President Soeharto
recently instructed the trial of the five day week for Elementary
Schools be stopped. This ruling of the President was
enthusiastically welcomed taking into account that elementary
school children cannot endure the long school hours from 7 a.m.
to 4 p.m. It was said that many children felt ill because of
exhaustion. Besides, the five day week reduces the time for Koran
reciting lessons which are usually conducted before the magrib
sunset prayer. Leisure time is also reduced. Therefore I strongly
suggest that the trial of the five day school week be stopped.
