Five Areas in DKI Jakarta Threatened by Drought

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has stated that five regions in DKI Jakarta are threatened by drought. BMKG has even declared five areas in DKI Jakarta to be on meteorological drought alert status for the period of 1 to 10 September 2026.

These five regions include West Jakarta, Central Jakarta, East Jakarta, North Jakarta, and the Seribu Islands Regency. This status is listed under the meteorological drought early warning section on the official BMKG website, as reported on Thursday (3/9).

Meteorological drought refers to a condition where rainfall in a region is lower than its normal climatological levels over a specific period. This condition can be caused by weather and climate variability or anomalies.

Prolonged meteorological drought can lead to agricultural drought, hydrological drought, and even social and economic drought. Meteorological drought is classified into four categories: “no warning”, “alert”, “standby”, and “extreme”.

These five regions in DKI Jakarta fall into the “standby” category. The standby status means the regions are predicted to experience a sufficiently long period of rainless days, specifically a minimum of 31 days.

In response to this warning, the public is urged to conserve water usage, refrain from burning land or waste, and reduce outdoor activities during the daytime.
