Fishing village destroyed in storm

PANDEGLANG, West Java: Dozens of houses in the fishing village
of Teluk, Labuan were destroyed by huge waves recently.

Antara reported yesterday that the size of waves in the Sunda
Strait has risen since mid-November. Waves and rain struck the
houses located very near the shoreline, it reported.

Several fishermen complained that the construction of a
breakwater, which the Ministry of Transportation's local office
started three months ago, was recently halted. No explanation was
available as to why the project was stopped.

"Had the project been completed, the waves wouldn't have
destroyed our homes," one fishermen said.

"It was probably stopped because the workers ran out of
building materials," another said. (fai/swe)
