Fishing Vessel Capsizes in Kaliantan Waters as Waves Hit, 1 Crew Missing
A fishing vessel carrying five crew members capsized after being hit by waves in the Kaliantan waters, Jerowaru District, East Lombok Regency, West Nusa Tenggara Province (NTB). One person was declared missing in the incident.
Muhammad Darwis, coordinator of the Kayangan Search and Rescue Post, said the capsizing occurred at around 5:30 p.m. WITA (Central Indonesia Time) on Friday (5 March). He stated that the missing crew member was swept away by the current after the vessel he was aboard capsized.
‘We received the report of the incident from a member of the Lombok Timur Polairud, Baidullah,’ Darwis said in a statement on Friday night.
Darwis explained that the vessel capsized while returning from Kaliantan waters to Labuan Lombok, Kayangan District, East Lombok. ‘The boat was struck from behind by a wave, causing the captain to lose control and eventually capsize, with all crew going under,’ he added.
Four of the five crew members aboard were rescued. The remaining one, a man named Amirudin (50), a resident of Sinjai Regency, South Sulawesi, is still missing.
‘The Rescue Team of the Kayangan SAR Post has been deployed to the scene to conduct a search operation in coordination with the joint SAR elements,’ he said.
As of Friday night, the joint SAR team had not yet located the missing person. Darwis said the search operation would resume today.
