TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:Indonesian Fishery Businessmen Association chairman Hendri Sutandinata said the impact of the global financial crisis are starting to affect the fishery sector. He said US demand for Indonesian fishery products have plunged by 30 – 40 percent while demand from European markets have declined by 10 percent. This has forced several companies to reduce their operating working hours.

“We have not yet dismissed any workers, but we started reducing their working hours and the number of shifts,” Hendri said during a meeting with Maritime and Fisheries minister, Freddy Numberi, yesterday.

Besides the decline in exports, there have been requests for a number of signed contracts to delay their implementation, Hendri explained, adding, “The prices have gone down from US$ 41 to US$ 35."
