Residents of Bontobulaeng Village, East Pasimasunggu District, Selayar Islands Regency, South Sulawesi, found human remains on the shore of Bonesialla Beach.

“According to the report we received, the remains were found by two residents on a rock by the beach,” Selayar Islands Police Chief AKBP Didid Imawan said on Sunday (25 October).

The remains were first discovered at around 5pm Central Indonesia Time by two residents, Muh. Kasing, 39, and Kamaruddin, 42, while they were fishing near the beach. They then reported the discovery to the hamlet head and the police.

“Officers subsequently evacuated the remains and took them to the local community health centre for further examination,” he said.

According to the family, the remains are believed to be those of Sakinang, 65, a fisherman from Pandang Timur Hamlet, Bontobulaeng Village, who was reported missing while fishing on Tuesday (29 September).

“Based on the family’s account, the remains are suspected to belong to a resident who was previously reported missing while fishing at sea. However, further examination is still needed to confirm the person’s identity and the cause of death,” he said.

After examination, the remains of the Selayar resident were buried in his home village.

“We urge the public to remain calm and not speculate about the incident,” he said.
