Fishermen damage marine park

TERNATE, Maluku: The Tagalaya National Marine Park in northern Maluku is in danger due to the continual use of explosives and potassium, a local official said as quoted by Antara.

Damage was reported around Tagalaya and Kakara islands in Tobelo subdistrict.

"Fishermen from Ternate and Buton in Southeast Sulawesi take World War II explosives from Morotai island and reassemble the devices to catch fish in the protected marine park," the Tobelo subdistrict chief, Agiel Bachmid, said.

The fishermen also use potassium, he said. (edt)
