The Fisheries Office of Mimika Regency, Central Papua Province, has stated that eight villages in coastal areas will soon be developed as Red and White Fishing Villages (KNMP).

Head of the Mimika Fisheries Office, Clemens Ohoilulin, said in Timika on Monday that the KNMP is a national strategic programme, and therefore the construction of various facilities under the programme will be carried out by the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP).

“I have not yet received a progress report from the contractor. Tomorrow I will coordinate with them regarding the progress of their work,” he said.

He said the eight villages to be developed under the KNMP programme are Pomako Village in East Mimika District, Kiyura Village in West Mimika District and Atuka Village in Central Mimika District.

Also included are Amar Village and Ipiri Village in Amar District, Pronggo Village and Mupuruka Village in Central West Mimika District, and Potowayburu Village in Far West Mimika District.

“Of these eight, three villages — Pomako, Ipiri and Potowayburu — will be KNMP hubs, while the other five villages will be supporting villages,” he said.

He explained that a KNMP hub is the main fishing village serving as a centre of activities and overseeing the supporting Red and White Fishing Villages.

“The supporting KNMP villages will channel their produce to the KNMP hub,” he said.

Facilities to be built at the KNMP hubs include boat moorings, fish landing shelters, a portable cold storage warehouse with a capacity of 20 tonnes and a portable ice plant with a capacity of three tonnes.

They will also include a culinary centre, supply kiosks, boat docking and workshop facilities, a management office, waste disposal facilities, a water tower and storage, area lighting, a generator house, road access, a gate and wastewater treatment plant (IPAL) facilities.

Meanwhile, the supporting KNMP villages will serve surrounding or smaller fishing villages, functioning as suppliers and supporting the supply chain.

Facilities to be built in the supporting KNMP villages include boat mooring areas, fish landing shelters, a portable ice warehouse with a capacity of three tonnes, supply kiosks and a culinary centre, a generator building, road access, a gate, a water storage tower, a drilled well and lighting.

“The information I received from the facilitators is that three facilitators will be assigned to each Red and White Fishing Village,” he said.
