Fish breeders in limbo due to drought

YOGYAKARTA: About 500 fish ponds have dried up in Sanden, Bantul, following a prolonged drought in the area, fish breeders say.

The drought had cost breeders millions of rupiah, Sukamto, the secretary to the Sanden Fish Breeders Association, said.

About 250 breeders harvested the ponds every three months and could earn a net profit of between Rp 350,000 and Rp 750,000 a harvest.

Fish breeding had been a valuable extra source of income for people in the district for years, he said. -- JP
