The signature of the President of the United States (US), Donald Trump, will be included on American dollar bills starting from this summer. This will be the first time in US history that the signature of a sitting president appears on American dollar bills.

The US Department of the Treasury, as reported by Reuters on Friday (27/3/2026), stated that the policy involving the redesign of American dollar bills is planned to mark the 250th anniversary of US independence, which falls on 4 July.

With the redesign, for the first time in the last 165 years, the signature of the US Treasurer will be removed from American dollar bills.

The US Treasurer is an official under the Secretary of the Treasury, who reports to the Secretary and is responsible for overseeing the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, the US Mint – the federal agency responsible for producing and distributing US coins, and other functions of the Department of the Treasury.

The first $100 bills with Trump’s signature and that of US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will be printed in June. This will be followed by other American dollar bill denominations in the subsequent months.

The new design bills are estimated to take a few weeks to circulate in banks.

The US Department of the Treasury is currently still producing bills that feature the signature of Janet Yellen, the former Treasury Secretary during President Joe Biden’s era, and former US Treasurer Lynn Malerba.

Malerba will be the last in a long list of US Treasurers whose signatures have appeared on US currency since 1861, when the US government first issued it.

Bessent, in his statement, described this step as appropriate for the 250th anniversary of US independence, given the strong economic growth and financial stability during Trump’s second term.

“There is no more powerful way to acknowledge the historic achievements of our great nation and President Donald J Trump than with US dollar bills bearing his name, and it is fitting that this historic currency is issued on the 250th anniversary,” said Bessent.

The law governing the printing of bills by the Federal Reserve gives broad authority to the Department of the Treasury to change the design to prevent counterfeiting. That law requires retaining certain elements, including the words “In God We Trust”, and only allows portraits of deceased individuals.

According to several US Department of the Treasury officials, the overall design of the new version of US dollar bills will not change, except for Trump’s signature, which will replace the US Treasurer’s signature.
