An atmosphere of camaraderie and gratitude enveloped the productive waqf land owned by the Yayasan Amanah Kemanusiaan Global (AMAL) in Pangauban Village, Batujajar Subdistrict, West Bandung Regency, last week. It was here that the first harvest of edamame plants took place as part of the foundation’s Productive Waqf programme.

The initial harvest ceremony was marked by the picking of edamame pods by foundation officials and local community leaders. In addition to the harvest process, the event included a tasting session of boiled edamame snacks held in the dining area of a villager’s home, creating a warm atmosphere between the foundation’s officials and the surrounding community.

Harvest Results Exceed Expectations

Andri, Director of PT Cahaya Hidup Persada, the entity responsible for managing this Edamame Productive Waqf Garden, explained that edamame planting began on 24 January 2026.

“The land preparation, fertilisation, mulching, and sowing of superior edamame seeds were carried out in stages. The harvest is also being conducted in phases,” said Andri.

The first phase harvest covered an area of approximately 2,000 square metres. The second phase will involve harvesting another 2,000 square metres. From 12 kilograms of seeds, the first phase yielded 1,320 kilograms of edamame. The total seeds planted across about one hectare amount to 46 kilograms, with an estimated total harvest of 5,000 kilograms.

“The ratio of harvest yield to the amount of superior edamame seeds planted is better than anticipated. Normally 1:100, but the result is 1:110,” said Andri, a young man who has been involved in agriculture since his student days, accompanied by Wahab, the Coordinator of the Edamame Productive Waqf Farmers.

For the next planting, intensification will be pursued as there is still space available on the mulched area. The target for the subsequent planting is 70 kilograms of superior seeds, with hopes of achieving a harvest of around 8 tonnes.

Productive Waqf for Welfare and Food Security

Ustaz Ridwan Kamaludin, Chairman of the AMAL Foundation, stated that this Edamame Productive Waqf programme is one of the foundation’s main activities. Additionally, there are other Productive Waqf programmes in fields such as snack food production with the Mabasa SME in Ciamis. The programme is implemented in line with guidance from KH. Miftah Faridl and Jaja Djahari, as Chairman of the Advisory Board and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Amal Foundation.

“Through this Productive Waqf, it is hoped that the foundation’s capacity to enhance the value of assistance to the community can be increased, while also supporting the welfare of volunteers and foundation officials,” said Ridwan.

This edamame farming programme also forms part of efforts to strengthen community food security. In the future, the Amal Foundation aims to expand the Productive Waqf programme to various regions, involving more waqif donors and business partners.

From a marketing perspective, the edamame harvest has received support from Andri and his team at PT Cahaya Hidup Persada.

“Alhamdulillah, the marketing aspect or buyers for the edamame harvest are assisted by Mr Andri and his team,” said Ridwan.
