First Day of New Banknote Exchange in Yogyakarta Attracts Large Crowds
The Bank Indonesia (BI) service for exchanging new banknotes for Eid al-Fitr opened today. Although Eid is still some time away, many residents flocked to exchange their money on the first day of the service.
At one of the exchange points in Yogyakarta, namely in the courtyard of the Kauman Grand Mosque, Yuni Astuti, a resident who exchanged money, explained her reason for choosing to exchange money on the fifth day of Ramadan.
“Well, in previous years, it was quite difficult to get it done. Either the website was down, so this time when the first period opened, I immediately tried,” said Yuni when met at the Kauman Grand Mosque, Monday (23/2/2026).
“Even though it was still difficult, I finally got it. So it’s better to do it early, rather than later when it’s too late and I can’t get it. Last year I failed, but thankfully this year I got it in the first period,” she added.
To be able to exchange money on the first day of the 2026 Semarak Rupiah Ramadan and Berkah Idulfitri (Serambi) program, Yuni said she had to make a reservation through the PINTAR application since February 16, 2026.
“Yes, I had to register first. I also had to queue on the website. So we queue first to make the reservation. Basically, the queue is sometimes refreshed, then it goes back to the beginning. There are a lot of dramas, but thankfully I got it,” she said.
In the Serambi program, each person can only exchange a maximum of Rp 5,300,000. The details are 50 pieces of Rp 50,000, 50 pieces of Rp 20,000, 100 pieces of Rp 10,000, 100 pieces of Rp 5,000, and 100 pieces of Rp 2,000.
“I exchanged Rp 2.8 million, but I didn’t exchange the Rp 50,000 notes. It’s for my beloved nieces and nephews and the children around here,” said Yuni.
The rupiah exchange program is open from February 23 to March 12, 2026. The Head of the BI DIY Representative Office, Sri Darmadi Sudibyo, explained that the locations of the Serambi program are spread across six mosques, with two mosques in the city of Yogyakarta, and one mosque each in Sleman, Bantul, Kulon Progo, and Gunungkidul.
The mobile cash service at the mosques is valid from February 23-26, 2026. Meanwhile, from February 25 to March 12, 2026, the exchange can be done at 34 banks in DIY. An integrated money exchange service is also available at the Graha Wana Bhaktiyasa Pendopo courtyard from March 3-5, 2026.
“So this is the first day of Serambi, we have 300 packages here. During the exchange period, we will prepare according to the packages,” said Sudibyo when met at the Kauman Mosque, today.
