Firms probed over pollution

SURABAYA, East Java: Chief of the East Java Police command
Maj. Gen. Roesmanhadi says that six companies will be
investigated for allegedly polluting the environment.

"Nobody is above the law in cases of polluting the
environment," he was quoted by Antara as saying last week.

Head of the economic investigation division of the East Java
police Lt. Col. Endro Wardoyo identified the six companies as PT
Mertex in Mojokerto, PT Setia Kawan in Tulungagung, PT Gawe Redjo
in Sidoarjo, PT Kingdom in Surabaya, PT Timur Mega Steel in
Gresik, and PT Hoychy also in Gresik.

He said that laboratory analyses showed that the six companies
polluted the environment with industrial waste.(imn)
