Firm appraisal to cover women issue

JAKARTA: State Minister for the Environment Nabiel Makarim said on Friday that beginning next year, his office would include the rights of women laborers in its environmental appraisals of firms.

"We can't implement this in the evaluation and ranking program of firms (PROPER) this year, with the results to be announced in January, but we'll do it next year," Nabiel said after signing a memorandum of understanding on enhancing women's role in the environment with State Minister for Women's Empowerment Sri Rejeki Soemaryoto.

At present, PROPER tests firms' efforts to control water, air and solid pollution, and other poisonous wastes, with the results to be made available to the public. --JP
