Firm after Ancol port project

JAKARTA (JP): A private company is interested in building a multi-purpose port, with an investment commitment of about Rp 1 billion (US$454,545), in Ancol, North Jakarta, Director General of Sea Transportation Soentoro said.

Soentoro said that the proposal for the construction of the port project is currently being worked out by officials of the Ministry of Finance, Antara reported over the weekend.

"The construction of the port project is expected to start in 1997 and be completed within two years under a build, operate and transfer cooperation scheme with the state-owned port company PT Pelabuhan Indonesia II," he said.

The port project is designed to provide loading and unloading services for various types of articles, including solid substances, bulk goods and goods packed in containers, he said, without giving the name of the interested company.

The director general said that in line with the construction of the port project, the firm will also reclaim adjacent coastal lands totaling 500 hectares.

The proposal has been approved by the Ministry of Transportation, Soentoro said at a ceremony for the signing of a contract, in agreement with PT Bimantara Artika Citra, for the development and installation of maritime telecommunications systems in a number of areas throughout Indonesia.

Under the agreement, PT Bimantara Artika Citra, in cooperation with Panorama Timur Jaya and Racal Electronica, will build navigation telecommunications networks, including the installation of 10 coastal radio stations of Class III, five radio stations of Class IV and 11 communication radios at state navigation ships with a combined investment commitment of Rp 5.48 billion.

The locations of the coastal radio station projects will be Batu Ampar, Panjang, Benoa, Dili, Pontianak, Tarakan, Donggala, Kendari, Ternate, Merauke, Lembar, Tahuna, Sanana, Manokwari and Fak-Fak.

The state navigation ships to be equipped with the communication radios will include Kumba, Mesa, Mithuna, Mandalika and Muci.

Another contract agreement was also signed by Embagpro and Tomen Corporation for the procurement of education and training equipment for the Surabaya Rating School. (hhr)
