Firework Assembly Explodes, Two Buildings in Denpasar Destroyed by Fire

A fire accompanied by a firework explosion razed two buildings on Jalan Siulan, Gang Nusa Indah, East Denpasar, Denpasar City, on Tuesday afternoon (15/9/2026). The blaze is suspected to have been triggered by a firework that suddenly exploded whilst being assembled.

The owner of the burned premises, M. Ali (53), said his building was not a fireworks production site, but rather rented accommodation that also served as a storage place for decoration service equipment.

“So we bought the fireworks and assembled them for a show. This is not a warehouse, it is rented accommodation. We assembled them, then we were going to transport them,” Ali said when met at the scene of the fire.

Ali said the fire began when his employee was assembling fireworks to be displayed in Karangasem and Nusa Penida the following day. At the time, the employee was assembling them using adhesive tape.

However, a firework suddenly exploded whilst being assembled. The flames then caught the fabrics used for decorations, causing the fire to spread rapidly.

“At first we were applying tape, and then suddenly it exploded on its own. We are decoration people, so the flames ran to the fabrics and grew bigger and bigger,” he said.

The explosion is believed to have spread to a motorcycle paint workshop located across from the premises, leaving that workshop burned to the ground as well.

Two people suffered burns in the incident: I Made Gede (35), who was referred to Dharma Yadnya Hospital, and Tina Kustina (22), who sustained minor burns.

Police are still investigating the exact cause of the fire. Both crime scenes have now been cordoned off for forensic examination.
