Firefighters tackle rubbish pile fire in Thousand Islands
The North Jakarta and Thousand Islands Fire and Rescue Service (Sudin Gulkarmat) tackled a fire involving a pile of rubbish on Jalan Tanjongan Timur, Pulau Tidung Village, South Thousand Islands District, on Friday morning.
“The fire is suspected to have been caused by cigarette butts being discarded carelessly, which triggered the land fire,” said Gatot Sulaeman, Head of Operations for the North Jakarta and Thousand Islands Fire and Rescue Service, in Jakarta on Friday.
He stated that the department deployed two fire motor units and eight personnel to extinguish the burning area.
According to him, officers received information regarding the fire at 04:30 WIB and rushed to the scene.
“The object on fire was a pile of rubbish covering an area of 100 square metres,” Gatot explained.
The fire was reported by residents passing through the area who noticed the rubbish pile behind SMKN 61 burning. The residents immediately contacted the fire department.
“Alhamdulillah, the fire has been successfully managed by the officers,” said Gatot.
He also urged the public to remain vigilant and careful regarding activities that could trigger fires, particularly the careless disposal of cigarette butts and conducting open burning that could lead to land fires.
