Firefighter Who Died at East Jakarta TPS Had Been Advised Not to Join Operation
Firefighter Andriyono, Head of the Quick Response Crew in the Cipayung Sector, died whilst extinguishing a fire at an illegal waste disposal site (TPS) in Kramat Jati, East Jakarta. The late Andriyono had been asked by his subordinates not to take part in the firefighting operation at the location.
This was revealed by the Head of the Fire and Rescue Sub-Department (Sudin Gulkarmat) for East Jakarta, Muchtar. According to him, Andriyono had only recently recovered from an operation for a heart condition.
“He did indeed have a history of heart disease. Then, as it happens, he held the position of crew chief, Danru. His subordinates had already warned him, because he had not long had the operation — a ring fitted in his heart — not long ago. His subordinates said, ‘Commander, there’s no need to go, leave it to us,’” Muchtar told reporters at the illegal TPS in Kramat Jati, East Jakarta, on Monday (3/8/2026).
Nevertheless, at the time Andriyono insisted on carrying out his responsibility as a firefighter. He set off with his unit to the scene of the fire.
“Because he had a strong sense of responsibility and so on, he went,” said Muchtar.
Upon arriving at the location, Andriyono carried out his duty within the crew as a water hoseline operator. However, he became exhausted and eventually collapsed.
A number of personnel at the scene immediately came to Andriyono’s aid. They performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) until Andriyono regained consciousness and was able to speak.
“Every effort was made by all his colleagues, including CPR. He then regained consciousness and was chatting normally,” he said.
About 30 minutes later, Andriyono’s body suddenly went into convulsions. CPR was performed again before Andriyono was eventually taken to hospital. At the hospital, doctors declared that Andriyono had passed away.
“He was conscious for an hour. Then half an hour later, he started convulsing again. CPR was performed all the way to the hospital. By the time he reached the hospital, he was gone,” he said.
The loss of this firefighting personnel has caused deep grief, particularly within the ranks of the East Jakarta Sudin Gulkarmat. The incident experienced by Andriyono has also become a lesson for evaluation.
“Tomorrow there was going to be a consultation with a doctor anyway, because of the risks of our work. Yesterday we were given advice — there is some kind of tablet to be placed under the tongue. It dissolves on its own; the concern earlier was a follow-up heart attack,” said Muchtar.
“That’s why tomorrow I want to consult, and I will try to submit a request to the Health Sub-Department so that we can stock it in our ambulances or at our stations and so forth,” he added.
As is known, the fire that struck the illegal TPS in Kramat Jati occurred on Saturday morning (1/8) at around 07.10 Western Indonesian Time. The blaze resulted in the death of one firefighter.
