Firecrackers cause havoc
Firecrackers cause havoc
From Neraca
At this time of year, the hearts of many Jakarta residents
sink at the sound of firecrackers. Before the Muslim fasting
month arrives, the city's markets are glutted with various types
of firecrackers, which are sold openly to the public.
Unfortunately, firecrackers are often used by youngsters to
frighten passers by. This silly act can trigger chaos and
trouble.
The other day a group of youngsters were playing with
firecrackers at Mangga Besar Railway Station. They set off a
string of small firecrackers. The firecrackers flew in various
directions, causing panic and commotion among passengers who were
waiting for a train. Despite objections made by some passengers,
the youngsters continued with their tomfoolery.
Luckily, the incident did not develop into a fight as the
train arrived and passengers got onboard.
However, I would like to appeal to all the authorities
concerned to take strict measures against the trading of
firecrackers before and during the month of fasting. To date,
there have been many cases involving serious injuries caused by
firecrackers. We cannot afford to see any more victims.
