PONTIANAK, West Kalimantan: The provincial authorities have imposed a ban on the use firecrackers and fireworks during the fasting month of Ramadhan starting next month.

The restriction came following a recent explosion in East Pontianak which burned down four houses.

Police spokesman Comr. Suhadi SW said on Thursday residents would not be allowed to sell, possess, store or use firecrackers. The police will also launch an operation to uphold the ruling.

Suhadi emphasized that based on a law on firecrackers issued in 1932, the owner and seller of firecrackers could be sentenced to two months in prison. - Antara
