Persebaya Surabaya’s management has decided to close the North Stand at Gelora Bung Tomo Stadium (GBT) in Surabaya until the end of the 2025/2026 Super League season. The closure follows widespread hate speech and ongoing incidents of fans lighting firecrackers during matches.

In an official statement from Persebaya Surabaya on Friday (6 March), the decision was taken after the club held discussions with the police and various stakeholders. During the meeting, management noted the prevalence of hate speech and the lighting of firecrackers in the North Stand during a league match held on Monday, 2 March 2026. The management emphasised that the move is taken to safeguard the safety and comfort of all supporters in attendance.

‘To uphold the dignity of football that adheres to sportspirit, mutual respect, and humanity,’ the statement read.

The closure of the North Stand will take effect for Persebaya’s upcoming home match against Persita Tangerang at Gelora Bung Tomo Stadium in Surabaya, scheduled for Saturday 4 April. The club’s management also announced the measure on its official social media accounts, aiming to create a more conducive atmosphere for everyone involved in the match.

Supporters interviewed by the press condemned such conduct as immature, particularly the use of firecrackers on the pitch; one supporter from Sidoarjo, Riza Septiah, said the measure would allow supporters to reflect and be more mindful.
