Fire victims to get apartments
JAKARTA (JP): The city administration plans to build low cost apartments at Rawa Bebek, North Jakarta, for homeless victims of the Penjaringan fire, an official said.
The head of the city housing agency, Ongky Sukasah, said on Monday that the city administration will build the apartments in the 1996/1997 fiscal year on a plot of land belonging to the city-owned developer, PD Sarana Jaya.
Ongky said that the 200 units will be financed by a private developer, PT Catur Swasakti Utama, developer of a luxurious apartment complex on Jl. HR. Rasuna Said and is obliged to build low cost apartments as required by a Gubernatorial Decree.
"We can only afford to build 200 units in Rawa Bebek, hopefully the remaining victims will be relocated to other low- cost apartments," Ongky said.
The fire destroyed at least 2,000 houses in the Muara Baru, Penjaringan, North Jakarta, a fishermen's slum area, on Jan. 5. At least 5,000 families were made homeless.
The fire, caused by a kerosene stove explosion, caused Rp 100 million (US$46,511) in material losses. (yns)
