A fire has broken out in a settlement in the Gambir area of Central Jakarta. Black smoke is billowing around the location.

Monitoring by detikcom on Jalan Batu Ceper VII and Jalan Batu Ceper VIII, Gambir, on Monday (31/8/2026) at 2.45pm WIB, showed the fire was still raging. The smell of smoke from the blaze could also be detected around the area.

Firefighting efforts at the scene are still ongoing. Residents whose homes have been affected were seen salvaging their belongings. Several other residents were also seen crying upon learning that their homes had been burned.

The Head of the Central Jakarta Fire and Rescue Service (Gulkarmat), Syarifudin, said more than 80 firefighters had been deployed to the scene of the fire.

“Yes, that is correct (there is a fire in Gambir),” he said.

Based on data from the Command Center of the DKI Jakarta Fire and Rescue Service, the fire was reported by residents to the fire brigade by telephone at 1.40pm WIB.

A total of 21 fire engines and 85 firefighters have been deployed to extinguish the blaze. The cause and chronology of the fire are not yet known. There is also no information yet on whether there are any casualties as a result of the fire.
