Fire spreads smoke over KL
KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters): A smoldering fire at a rubbish dump on
the outskirts of Malaysia's capital yesterday spread a thick
cloud of smoke over the city, residents said.
A police spokeswoman told Reuters the blaze had broken out
Thursday evening in the sprawling dump on the southeastern edge
of Kuala Lumpur and was still burning yesterday.
Reuters photographer Vincent Thian said the fire was sending
up a thick cloud of black smoke carried by winds toward the heart
of the capital, some 15 kilometers away.
"There are no flames but lots of smoke," he said, speaking by
telephone from the dump site in Ulu Langat near Cheras town in
Selangor state, which borders Kuala Lumpur.
