Firefighters successfully extinguished a fire that broke out in the server room of Istiqlal Mosque, confirming that conditions are now safe.

“It’s safe. All the smoke has been cleared,” said Central Jakarta Fire and Rescue Sub-department Duty Officer Agus Sya’ban to reporters in the grounds of Istiqlal Mosque, Central Jakarta, on Wednesday (18/2/2026).

Agus explained that the smoke at Istiqlal Mosque was caused by a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) unit that caught fire in the server room. He said molten material from its panel produced billowing smoke.

“What caught fire appears to have been underneath — there was already molten material, melted from the panel. The panel above. The UPS battery,” he said.

Agus stated that the fire report was received at approximately 8.40pm local time. Fire crews arrived at the scene minutes later.

“The response didn’t take long, roughly five minutes, as we had to prepare our SCBA equipment,” he said.

“When we arrived at the scene there was still a point of fire, about half a metre of flame underneath. We extinguished it with a portable fire extinguisher,” he added.
