Fire razes Tambora slum

JAKARTA (JP): Fire razed at least 20 houses in the dense
modest housing complex of Tambora in West Jakarta on Thursday,
but no casualties were reported.

Most of the houses affected were located in neighborhood units
six and 11.

Witnesses said the fire began at around 1 p.m. after a stove
belonging to a tenant blew up. However, local residents only
called the fire brigade an hour later.

It took 12 fire engines from the West Jakarta fire brigade
unit two hours to douse the flames, thanks in part to the crowded
complex.

Police are investigating the case. (amd)
