Fire razes 700 houses

BANJARMASIN, South Kalimantan: About 700 houses, places of
worship, schools and other buildings were destroyed by brush
fires in the Banua Raya and Bati Bati subdistricts in Tanah Laut
regency Sunday afternoon.

Antara reported there were no casualties, but 4,000 people
were left homeless.

Efforts to extinguish the fire were hampered by strong winds
and a lack of water due to the long dry spell. (swe)
