Fire rages in Marriott kitchen

JAKARTA: A fire that began in the kitchen of Syailendra restaurant in the basement of JW Marriott Hotel in Mega Kuningan, South Jakarta, on Tuesday morning, caused severe damage to the ceiling of the restaurant.

South Jakarta fire agency head Freddy Alling said that the fire started at around 10:45 a.m. Firefighters arrived at the scene at about 11 a.m.

No one was injured in the blaze.

"We sent 12 trucks and dozens of personnel to the location. We had difficulty reaching the source of the fire as it was located in the basement. We used the hotel's hydrant first but we later managed to gain access to the fire," said Freddy.

He said that they were able to extinguish the blaze after half an hour.

The fire, Freddy added, was possibly caused by a short circuit in the ceiling of the restaurant's kitchen. -- JP
