Fire Prevention: Pramono States Every RW in Jakarta is Equipped with Fire Extinguishers

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has stated that portable fire extinguishers (APAR) have been provided in every neighbourhood unit (RW) across Jakarta. The provision of these extinguishers is a preventative measure against fires in Jakarta during the dry season.

Pramono noted that he had instructed his administration to ensure APAR availability in every RW, adding that the programme is currently underway.

“I also wanted to ensure that APAR is available in every RW so that if anything happens, our collective anticipation is already in place,” Pramono said at Monas, Central Jakarta, on Wednesday (2/9/2026).

When asked about the coverage of extinguishers at the regional level, Pramono mentioned that every RW is targeted to possess an APAR. He expressed confidence that the programme has now been fulfilled.

“I requested every RW to have them, and since this programme is already running, I am confident that every RW now possesses them,” he said.

Furthermore, Pramono emphasised the importance of preparedness in facing the dry season. According to reports from the Jakarta Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), 457 fire incidents occurred in Jakarta between July and August 2026. In August alone, the number of fires reached 240 cases.

Pramono mentioned that electrical short circuits are the most dominant suspected cause of these fires. Other causes include waste burning and negligence, such as the improper disposal of cigarette butts.

“The most dominant cause is electrical short circuits. Secondly, there is waste burning, and some incidents occur due to negligence, such as people discarding cigarette butts, and so on,” Pramono said.

West Jakarta recorded the highest number of fires, followed by East Jakarta. According to Pramono, the Tambora and Cakung districts are identified as areas with high fire potential.
