Fire leaves 550 homeless

BANJARMASIN, South Kalimantan: A fire that broke out in the "diamond town" of Martapura Tuesday evening has left 550 people homeless and caused losses of about Rp 500 million (US$52,600).

No casualties was reported, but Antara said more than 10 fire crews were deployed to fight the blaze that burned for about two hours in the town located 40 kilometers north of here.

"The victims are staying with relatives, and relief aid has been flowing in from all quarters," a local administration spokesman, Syaiful Ansyari, said.

He said public kitchens were also being set up near the affected area.

Martapura is renowned for its diamond industry. (aan)
