Fire kills seven foreigners
KUALA LUMPUR (UPI): Seven foreign workers were killed in a fire at a door-making factory hostel yesterday, in the suburb of Kuala Lumpur, Senior Fire Officer Zakaria Mohamad said.
The victims were five man and two women, who were among more than 30 people on the first floor of the two-story Lean Hup factory, he said.
They were identified as Bangladeshi, Mazor Ali, and Indonesians, Sariman, Sikam, Mijat, Asaji, Wamah and Mulia. The Indonesians had only one name.
Bangladeshi worker Kabir Mumtaz, who suffered burns on his leg and body, said, "I woke up suddenly after feeling intense heat and panicked when I saw everything on fire."
Workers from Pakistan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Indonesia, the Philippines, Nigeria and Thailand are employed in Malaysia's labor-starved construction, factory and agriculture sectors.
