Fire kills seven foreigners
KUALA LUMPUR (UPI): Seven foreign workers were killed in a
fire at a door-making factory hostel yesterday, in the suburb of
Kuala Lumpur, Senior Fire Officer Zakaria Mohamad said.
The victims were five man and two women, who were among more
than 30 people on the first floor of the two-story Lean Hup
factory, he said.
They were identified as Bangladeshi, Mazor Ali, and
Indonesians, Sariman, Sikam, Mijat, Asaji, Wamah and Mulia. The
Indonesians had only one name.
Bangladeshi worker Kabir Mumtaz, who suffered burns on his leg
and body, said, "I woke up suddenly after feeling intense heat
and panicked when I saw everything on fire."
Workers from Pakistan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Indonesia, the
Philippines, Nigeria and Thailand are employed in Malaysia's
labor-starved construction, factory and agriculture sectors.
