Jakarta (ANTARA) - The intensity of fires in the West Jakarta region from January to August 2026 has increased by 9.51 per cent compared to the same period in the previous year.

“The intensity of fires increased by 9.51 per cent, representing an additional 29 incidents compared to the January-August 202<0xC2>5 period,” said the Head of the West Jakarta Fire and Rescue Service (Gulkarmat), Suheri, when confirmed in Jakarta on Wednesday.

Suheri stated that the most significant increase occurred in waste fires, rising from nine incidents in 2025 to 63 incidents in 2026. Meanwhile, fires involving outdoor installations also increased from 66 to 74 incidents.

“Furthermore, vegetation fires rose from nine to 25 incidents, while stall/vendor fires increased from eight to 12 incidents,” he said.

On the other hand, several categories experienced a decline. Fires in residential buildings dropped from 111 incidents in 2025 to 78 incidents in 2026.

“Additionally, fires in public and commercial buildings decreased from 80 to 70 incidents, while industrial building fires fell from 11 to six incidents,” he added.

The agency has also launched the “Citizens Prevent Fire” movement in the Duri Utara Village, Tambora District. As a follow-up, the formation and training of Community Fire Volunteers (Redkar) were carried out across 15 locations during August 2026.

These 15 locations include Pekojan, Jembatan Lima, Duri Selatan, Tanah Sereal, Kebon Jeruk, Sukabumi Selatan, Kapuk, Mangga Besar, Tangki, Taman Sari, Wijaya Kusuma, Meruya Utara, Kembangan Utara, Tegal Alur, and Kota Bambu Utara.

In addition to the formation of Redkar, fire prevention and management training and simulations at the neighbourhood (RW) level will be conducted across 15 locations in October 2026. These locations include Kapuk, Wijaya Kusuma, Maphar, Tangki, Pekojan, Jembatan Lima, Tambora, Tanah Sereal, Kelapa Dua, Sukabumi Selatan, Tegal Alur, Pegadungan, Kota Bambu, Meruya Utara, and Meruya Selatan.

“Another effort we are undertaking is the procurement of 670 fire extinguisher cylinders for the community. The distribution of these extinguishers will take place in October 2026, with priority given to fire-prone environments,” he concluded.
