Fire injures eight, guts 28 showrooms

JAKARTA: Eight people were injured when a fire gutted 28 showrooms on Thursday evening in Penggilingan, Cakung district, East Jakarta.

Cakung Police said on Friday they suspected the fire was caused by a compressor that exploded in a meatball soup kiosk owned by Tatat.

No fatalities were reported, and material losses have yet to be estimated.

Seven fire trucks were deployed to put out the fire.

Seven injured victims -- Yatim Purwanto, Sugiarto, Marsito, Humaidi, Sukino, Sukarman and Indra -- were taken to the Islamic Hospital in Pondok Kopi, East Jakarta. The eighth victim, who has not been identified, suffered severe burns and was admitted to Cipto Mangunkusuma General Hospital, Central Jakarta.

Police are still investigating the case. -- JP
