Fire Hotspots at Jatiwaringin Landfill Begin to Shrink, Firefighters Still Battling Embers on Fourth Day
The fire at the Jatiwaringin Final Processing Site (TPA) in Mauk District, Tangerang Regency, began to show positive developments on the fourth day of handling, Friday, 3 July 2026. The number of hotspots has reportedly decreased compared to previous days, although the extinguishing process is still ongoing as the blaze has not been fully subdued. Joint officers are still battling at the location to ensure that embers deep within the waste piles do not reignite a larger fire. The terrain, filled with mounds of rubbish with the heat source located internally, remains the main challenge in the extinguishing process. “The scene is still in the process of being extinguished because there are still several hotspots, but it is not as severe as yesterday,” said a call centre officer from the Tangerang Regency BPBD/Fire Department when contacted on Friday. Extinguishing efforts carried out since Tuesday, 30 June 2026, have begun to yield results. Officers reported that the intensity of the fire has decreased following intensive handling over the past few days. The reduction in hotspots is inseparable from the support of various parties, including the deployment of two helicopters conducting water bombing operations to douse areas that are difficult to reach by land routes. Nevertheless, officers have not halted the extinguishing process. Remaining embers at several points continue to be a concern to prevent them from growing again. Officers acknowledged that the extinguishing process requires more time compared to typical fires. This is because the heat source is located deep within the very high waste piles, making it difficult to reach. In addition to the vast area of the fire, this condition means that water sprayed from the surface does not directly reach the hotspots located underneath. “There has been progress from the previous day because the fire spread was quite extensive. It is rather difficult because the waste piles are high while the heat is inside, so the process takes a long time,” the officer stated. Consequently, crews continue to cool areas that are still emitting smoke while dismantling the waste piles using heavy equipment so that the hotspots can be reached.
