Fire destroys storage space

JAKARTA (JP): Fire has destroyed impermanent wooden structures used to store goods for the construction of a project owned by the state-owned Bank BNI 46 near Jl. Sudirman in Central Jakarta.

The fire occurred at around 7 a.m. Saturday at the project site run by the state-owned developer PT Waskita Karya.

Local authorities said no fatalities had been reported.

The cause of the fire remains unknown, but many witnesses said they heard a series of explosions during the fire, which was extinguished two hours after it started with the help of six fire engines.

Losses have yet to be estimated, but a number of personal computers and the blueprints for the project were destroyed.

Police are still checking into the cause of the fire.

"We cannot give the cause of the fire as the investigation is still going on," said an official of the Operational Control Section of the Fire Department in Central Jakarta.

A witness said that the fire razed three adjacent structures. (bsr)
