Jakarta Governor Surjadi Sudirdja appealed to Jakartans not to light fire crackers during the month of Ramadhan. The noise of fire crackers, especially at night, causes quite a disturbance to the environment and the sacredness of the taraweh (Ramadhan night prayers) and tadarus (reading Qur'an) activities. The governor made the appeal during a get-together with ulemas in Jakarta. So it is hoped that the ulemas will convey the governor's message to the communities in which they live.

However, as experience has shown, many people are quite indifferent at any kind of suggestions, expectations or appeals. The government should support the governor's appeal by banning not only the lighting of fire-crackers but also the sale of them.
