Fire Brigade Combs Scene After Python That Preyed on Cats Goes Viral in Depok

A video showing a python coiled around a cat at Gema Pesona Estate, Sukmajaya, Depok, has gone viral on social media. According to the narration, the snake has frequently preyed on cats at the location.

In the video seen by detikcom, the snake was in the middle of attacking the cat. Residents managed to record the moment. They said the snake had already killed several cats in the housing estate.

Tessy Haryati, Head of Operational Control at the Depok City Fire and Rescue Service (DPKP), said fire brigade members were immediately dispatched to the scene to attempt to capture the snake.

“We are standing at the scene at Gema Pesona, Depok, in Block U4. Earlier, residents had just reported a snake to us, but they tried to capture it themselves,” Tessy said in her statement on Tuesday (15/9/2026).

She said residents also went down to the location for a community clean-up. The damp condition of the site was a trigger for the snake’s presence.

“We did a clean-up first because the house happened to be in a dirty state — damp, with lots of trees. It has now been cleaned up by residents and is somewhat tidier,” she explained.

“Now we have deployed officers specifically to comb the area for the snake. If the snake had indeed just eaten a cat, we hope we would have been called to respond at that moment, because there would have been enough time for us to react,” she added.

However, the housing estate’s management is still trying to capture the snake on its own. Tessy urged residents to report immediately so the fire brigade can handle the situation directly, as it is dangerous if not dealt with by experts.

“But once again, if we can be alerted sooner, this is part of emergency response. If people are not experts and lack experience, I think this is something we can help with and handle,” she said.

Tessy explained that her team has now combed the location to capture the snake. However, the snake has yet to be found.
