Fire breaks out at Badung market

DENPASAR: A fire broke out at dawn yesterday at the traditional Badung market, destroying five shops and causing an estimated Rp 100 million (US$35,000) in losses.

No human casualties were reported in the fire that started at 1:30 a.m. at the market, located at the center of the tourist city, according to Antara.

Witnesses said the fire was followed by thick smoke caused by the burning of fabric, oil and plastic usually sold in the area.

It was not until later in the afternoon that firefighters were able to control the fire. The cause of the fire was still being investigated. (aan)
