Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia — A fire broke out at a laboratory in South Carolina, United States, within a complex that produces materials for US nuclear weapons. The incident prompted an emergency response at the site, but the fire was extinguished and there were no reports of contamination outside the facility.

CNN International reported that the Savannah River Site emergency response organisation declared an emergency at 5.39 pm local time on Wednesday, 28 October 2026. The fire occurred at Savannah River National Laboratory, part of the US Department of Energy’s Savannah River Site complex near the city of Aiken.

The announcement temporarily halted traffic at the facility’s entrances. As a precaution, rail, river and air transport in the surrounding area was also restricted.

In an update later that evening, site management said there had been no “operational emergency or scheduled delay” at the facility as of 9.18 pm. Traffic at all entrance gates had returned to normal. The site emergency was officially ended at 9.45 pm.

Workers scheduled to start their next shift were allowed to report for work as usual. Management said facility officials had directed the emergency response and notified state and local government agencies.

Earlier, people living nearby had been advised to follow local media for updates on whether further action would be needed. Employees in the affected area were also instructed to shelter in place as a precaution, except those directly involved in fighting the fire or shutting down operations.

Savannah River Site comprises a national laboratory and defence facilities overseen by the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), a semi-autonomous agency responsible for US nuclear security.

The complex is managed by two private contractors. Battelle Savannah River Alliance operates the laboratory, while Savannah River Nuclear Solutions LLC manages the defence facilities.

More than 13,000 contractor and federal government employees work at the complex.

Savannah River Site was built in the 1950s to produce tritium and plutonium for US nuclear weapons. It still produces tritium, and also handles spent nuclear fuel and stores uranium and plutonium.

The laboratory area where the fire occurred is focused more on research than on the large-scale production and storage of nuclear materials.

The complex is also a key part of the US government’s efforts to rebuild its capacity for large-scale nuclear warhead production. The NNSA recently approved a project to build a full-scale facility for producing plutonium pits, the explosive cores of modern nuclear weapons.

Industry publication Exchange Monitor estimates that the facility project will cost about US$23.5 billion. There have been no reports of any connection between the production project and the laboratory fire.
