The Sleman Police, Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY), have confirmed two deaths following a fire at the Trans Home Supermarket building in Sleman Regency on Thursday (1/10).

“Joint personnel from the fire department, police, Basarnas, medical staff, volunteers, and related agencies were deployed to carry out firefighting, cooling, and handling at the scene,” said Iptu Argo Anggoro, Head of Public Relations for Sleman Police, in a written statement on Thursday.

The fire occurred at the Trans Home Supermarket building, located on the Yogyakarta-Solo Road, Kilometer 11, Kalitirto, Berbah, Sleman Regency, and razed a three-storey building as well as one basement level.

Argo stated that the two deceased victims were identified as S (42) and WND (20), both residents of Sleman Regency. He added that there were also injured victims who have received medical treatment at a hospital. The total financial losses are still being assessed.

Police have not yet released information regarding the cause of the fire as investigations and crime scene processing are ongoing. “Officers are conducting security measures, crime scene processing, witness examinations, CCTV checks, and further information gathering to determine the starting point and cause of the fire,” he said.

“The total area of the burnt building is approximately 2,000 square metres, and the position was difficult. Therefore, the handling required extra effort,” he noted.

According to Nawa, the fire destroyed almost all the household appliances and electronics sold at the supermarket. He also mentioned that a significant number of motorcycles, belonging to either employees or visitors, were affected, though the exact number is still being identified.

Nawa confirmed that the fire from the Trans Home Supermarket building did not spread to adjacent buildings or shops because the firefighting team implemented a containment method from the outset to prevent further spread. “God willing, it did not spread to other places, because our method was to contain the fire before extinguishing it. It was contained so it would not expand,” he said.
