Fire at TPA does not disrupt waste collection services in Tangerang

The Tangerang Regency government in Banten Province has confirmed that waste collection services in the area are not disrupted despite a fire at the Jatiwaringin Final Disposal Site (TPA) in Mauk District on Tuesday (30/6).

Tangerang Regent Moch Maesyal Rasyid stated on Wednesday that the transportation of waste to the landfill site remains normal. Approximately 1,200 tonnes of waste enter the disposal area per day. “In terms of volume, it is still normal. We transport around 1,200 tonnes here,” he said.

Nevertheless, through the Environmental and Sanitation Agency (DLHK), the administration will manage the disposal zones to ensure operations continue during the fire extinguishing process. “The aim is so that collection trucks can still unload their cargo even though part of the TPA area is still affected by the fire,” he added.

The Tangerang Regency Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) is preparing to establish an emergency status and is coordinating with the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) to assist in firefighting using water-bombing helicopters.

Head of the Tangerang Regency BPBD, Achmad Taufik, said the request for assistance to the BNPB is to accelerate the handling of the Jatiwaringin TPA fire. His team is currently facing technical obstacles related to access conditions at the site, which are difficult for firefighters to reach.

“The position of the waste pile, which is like a mountain, is an obstacle. It is difficult for us to reach the top with vehicles, and although the hoses are quite long, the thick smoke makes it hard to access the fire points,” he explained.

He stressed the importance of the BNPB deploying water-bombing helicopters to expedite the emergency response to the local TPA fire. Currently, his team is optimising the operation of 10 fire engines with 45 personnel to extinguish the flames.
