Fire at Tanah Abang Shophouse Extinguished After Four Hours, Cause Under Investigation
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - A fire at a shophouse on Jalan H Fachrudin RT 008/RW 007, Kampung Bali, Tanah Abang, Central Jakarta, was extinguished after nearly four hours.
Duty Officer of the Jakarta Central Fire and Rescue Service (Gulkarmat), Supriyanto, said the service received the fire report at 6:12 PM. “We deployed three fire trucks from nearby units in Benhil and Tambora, plus one from the Central Jakarta Sub-District Service. A total of 110 personnel were involved,” he told Kompas.com at the scene on Monday (25/5/2026) evening.
“The fire was extinguished around 10:04 PM. The building is concrete with five storeys, so it took time to put out,” he added.
He noted that limited access between floors posed challenges on-site. Firefighters could only ascend via one staircase, requiring the extinguishing process to be carried out floor by floor from the ground up.
“We had to tackle each floor sequentially, which made it somewhat time-consuming,” he said.
Supriyanto stated the burning shophouse was an accessories store. The cause of the fire remains undetermined as of the extinguishing operation’s completion.
“When we arrived, the fire was already large. It started on the first floor before spreading to the second,” he explained.
During the operation, one Bronto Skylift vehicle was deployed to assist with spraying from the sides and front of the building.
“We also attempted to extinguish from both sides and the top of the burning structure,” he said.
He confirmed no occupants were present during the incident, resulting in no casualties.
Police Public Relations Officer for Jakarta Central Metropolitan Police, Erlyn Sumantri, also confirmed no casualties. “The cause is still under investigation, and the extent of damage has yet to be assessed,” he said.
Kompas.com observed more than three fire trucks at the scene, with dozens of personnel packing equipment into the vehicles. Police had cordoned off the five-storey shophouse with police tape.
