A fire at a state primary school (SDN) in Srengseng Sawah, Jagakarsa, South Jakarta, has been successfully extinguished. The fire occurred in a storage room used for keeping books.

“The object that caught fire was a book storage room,” said Sjukri Bahanan, Head of Operations for the South Jakarta Fire and Rescue Service (Gulkarmat), on Thursday (6/8/2026).

Firefighters completed the extinguishing operation at 12:34 WIB. The fire was first noticed by a school guard who smelled smoke during teaching hours, just before the lunch break.

“He smelled smoke while on the school field, then ran towards the source of the smell and saw flames inside the storage room for books and traditional musical instruments,” he stated.

The school guard attempted to put out the fire using a portable fire extinguisher (APAR) but was unsuccessful. Residents who witnessed the incident then reported it to the fire department at around 11:36 WIB.

Firefighters began the extinguishing operation at 11:44 WIB. The fire at SDN 04 Srengseng Sawah is suspected to have been caused by an electrical short circuit.

“The suspected cause of the fire is an electrical phenomenon,” he said.

The total area affected by the fire was approximately 120 square metres. The school building is located on Jalan Srengseng Sawah RT 04 RW 07, Srengseng Sawah, Jagakarsa District, South Jakarta.

A total of 15 fire engines and 60 personnel were deployed to the scene of the fire.
