Fire at Soekarno-Hatta Airport Cost Garuda Indonesia Rp 8.5b
Jakarta. National flag air carrier Garuda Indonesia lost Rp 8.5 billion ($638,600) due to flight cancellations caused by a fire
at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport last week, according to a top executive at the airline.
The bulk of losses were made up of compensation — flight refunds and accommodation costs — for passengers whose flights were
delayed or canceled, said Arif Wibowo, president director of Garuda Indonesia.
“Someone had quoted that our loss reached Rp 5 billion. After we calculated it again, turns out we lost up to Rp 8.5 billion,”
Arif told reporters in Jakarta on Sunday.
He said that Garuda was assessing several strategies in order to cover the losses.
Garuda management is also meeting with Angkasa Pura II, the state airport operator that’s in charge of operations at
Soekarno-Hatta, to discusses the losses, Arif added.
A fire started at the JW Sky Lounge at Terminal 2E last week, shutting off electricity across the terminal and delaying flight
schedules.
