Fire at Pademangan shophouse causes estimated Rp1 billion in losses

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The North Jakarta Fire and Rescue Sub-department (Sudin Gulkarmat) estimates the losses from a fire at an electronics shophouse in the Mahkota Ancol shophouse complex, Pademangan, North Jakarta, at Rp1 billion.

“The losses suffered by the victim are estimated at Rp1 billion,” said Gulkarmat Operations Head Gatot Sulaeman in Jakarta on Saturday.

Gatot said the fire completely destroyed the 70-square-metre shophouse owned by Yohanes (51).

According to him, the fire is suspected to have been caused by an electrical short circuit. Based on witness accounts, smoke was seen billowing from a neighbouring shophouse, and the witness reported it to the fire brigade to request assistance in handling the blaze.

Officers deployed 10 fire engines and a total of 50 personnel to extinguish the fire at the scene.

Officers received information about the fire at 14.15 Western Indonesia Time and arrived at the location at 14.20.

“The fire was successfully extinguished at 17.48 and the situation is now under control,” he said.

Gatot urged residents to remain vigilant against any potential fire hazards in their respective areas.

“Check electrical installations regularly and do not burn rubbish or other materials during the day. Keep a light fire extinguisher at home,” he said.
