Fire at Jatiwaringin Landfill Still Raging, Two Hectares of Land Ablaze

A fire at the Jatiwaringin Final Disposal Site (TPA) in Mauk District, Tangerang Regency, Banten, had not been extinguished by Tuesday (30/6) evening. Officers are still attempting to tame the flames burning through mountains of rubbish at the location. The fire at the Jatiwaringin TPA broke out on Tuesday afternoon, around 11:00 WIB.

Monitoring at the site on Tuesday evening showed flames still engulfing the waste piles, accompanied by plumes of white and black smoke billowing high into the air. The fire is concentrated on a mountain of rubbish in the southern part of the landfill.

A number of firefighting personnel from the Tangerang Regency Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) are continuing to battle the blaze. Officers have been deployed to several points to prevent the fire from spreading to other areas of the landfill.

Ujat Sudrajat, Head of the Tangerang Regency Environmental and Sanitation Agency (DLHK), stated that nine fire engines have been deployed to tackle the fire. He estimated that the area already burned exceeds two hectares. “If totalled, it could be more than two hectares now, that is the position of the fire,” Ujat said at the location.

He explained that the suspected cause of the fire was the hot weather, with strong winds causing the flames to spread rapidly. “My suspicion is that. From the hot weather, it started at the back there, then the strong wind made it spread quickly,” he said. As of the latest reports, officers are still working to localise the fire to prevent it from expanding to other parts of the Jatiwaringin TPA area.
