Fire at Interior Ministry Office in South Jakarta: What Happens to Important Documents?
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com — The Ministry of Home Affairs (Kemendagri) has assured that no strategic documents were impacted by the fire at Building D of the Directorate General for Village Governance and Civil Registration (Ditjen Bina Pemdes and Dukcapil) in Pasar Minggu, South Jakarta, on Monday (20/4/2026).
“So far, there are no important files in the location of the burned building,” said Deputy Minister of Home Affairs Bima Arya Sugiarto when confirmed by Kompas.com on Monday.
Meanwhile, the Secretary of Ditjen Bina Pemdes at Kemendagri, Murtono, emphasised that all important documents are stored in another building, thus remaining safe from the flames.
Nevertheless, he acknowledged that several administrative archives in the workspaces of Building D were affected by the fire.
“As for documents, document archives, yes, possibly because this is the workspace that burned, so the document archives,” he said.
Murtono explained that Building D consists of four floors, but the fire did not engulf the entire structure.
“Building D consists of four floors. The fire did not occur on all floors, only in parts of the rooms from the first to the fourth floor,” he said.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Kemendagri has handed over the process of identifying the initial fire point to the firefighting team.
“The fire initially appeared in a pile of used items, gradually growing larger and causing a fire on the first and second floors of Building D,” said Beni.
A total of 75 personnel from the South Jakarta Fire and Rescue Sub-Directorate (Sudin Gulkarmat) were deployed to extinguish the fire.
The fire report was received at 13:38 WIB, and officers began handling it at 13:47 WIB.
During the extinguishing process, seven fire trucks were deployed to the location to speed up the response.
